Happy Birthday Sakura

This isn't really a birthday piece- there's no birthday celebrating for Sakura. In fact it's the opposite of celebrating.

It's the start of a not-so-happy story that's been in my head, where Sakura is the main character. Something that a part of me wishes happened at the end of Naruto.

Sakura painted the rest of the seals on the two bodies lying in front of her. Going over the information in her head again, Sakura double checked her symbols and seal lines.

Reassured that she had done all she could, she took a deep breath and pulled on her chakra. The seal at the top of her head unravelled unleashing a rush of chakra that made her skin glow with energy. She grit her teeth at the heady feeling of power and channelled everything she could into the newly crafted seals.

With a twist of power and an almost whispered prayer, Sakura said, "Impure World Resurrection." She wondered if she should have renamed the technique. After all the changes she had wrought, it only vaguely resembled the original.

The two bodies in front of her surged with life, the elaborate seals around them channelling her power and allowing the bodies to shift forms.

After what felt like hours but was probably mere minutes, the procedure ran it's course and a strange aura filled the air. Sakura swallowed back her apprehension and stood, waiting for the two she had summoned to get their bearings.

It was the familiar blue eyes that blinked open first. "Sakura-chan?" Though hesitant, Naruto's familiar bright voice made Sakura's chest ache as he sat up. "Where... what?"

Beside him, Sasuke clutched at his chest as he looked around with narrowed eyes.

When Naruto looked at her, his blue irises seemed twice as bright against the black sclera. "Sakura-chan, you look different. Your hair..." Naruto paused.

Sakura resisted the urge to fiddle with her greying hair.

"We died," Sasuke said succinctly.

Sakura nodded. "You bled out before I could reach either of you morons."

They both blinked, as though surprised by her choice of words. Or maybe they were surprised by the roughness of her voice.

"It's been two years since you died. And things have gone…wrong. Very wrong."

They tensed as loud footsteps headed in their direction.

"Oi, Pinkie are you..." a white haired male stopped at the entrance, his purple eyes fixed on Sasuke. With shark like teeth, he smiled, "She actually brought you back, huh?"

"Suigetsu," Sasuke greeted, glancing between him and Sakura and managing to keep his confusion confined to a single quirk up of his eyebrow.

"There's a lot we need to catch you two up on," Sakura said. She turned to Suigetsu. "Where are the others?"

"Karin sensed something in the South, so she sent Juugo for recon."

Sakura nodded. "Then you're stuck with me for now."

Suigetsu leered.

Sakura sighed. "If you don't behave, I'll be sure to tell Karin."

"As long as I get a few hours of you to myself, I'll..."

Naruto raced forward with a burst of wind and caught Suigetsu by the throat, his hand glowing gold with his unique chakra.

Sakura rolled her eyes and placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "He's just messing around. But it's good to know that he can't shift forms when you capture him."

Suigetsu glared and rubbed his throat as he fell to the floor. "Show some sympathy here, pinkie."

"Ah, did you get hurt again Suigetsu?" Sakura asked apathetically. "Do you need to be patched up?"

"That cold attitude is the reason I don't want to bang you."

Sakura snorted.

"What going on?" Naruto asked with a confused expression. "Sakura-chan, why are you here with… are we in Konoha?"

The lightheartedness that came from Suigetsu's ridiculous nature disappeared in a flash. "Konoha…isn't safe. It's under the control of Zetsu."

"What?" Naruto yelled.

Sasuke echoed his disbelief with a tense posture.

"Zetsu didn't die that day, Naruto. When you two went off to do your… nonsense, Zetsu retaliated. Kakashi-sensei and I were already weakened from Kaguya. Zetsu got the upper hand."

"But you're..."

"Kakashi sacrificed himself to get me away." Sakura admitted, the old guilt of her survival returning with a vengeance. "To reach you two. But when I got there..."

"We were already dead," Sasuke volunteered.

Sakura nodded. "Even before everyone came out of that monstrous tree, I knew Zetsu would would push his advantage. So I sealed your corpses and ran." Noting that she had their complete attention, “The reason I summoned you here is because I need help. I need to destroy Zetsu and everything he's managed to accomplish in the past two years.”

I wish I knew for sure what Zetsu's plan was, but that's all I have for this story's starting scene at the moment. The only other scene I have is a Team 7 emotional rollercoaster that's full of sobs and heartbreak.

That's all for now,
